Reach for the Stars

Empowering Students to Reach Their Full Potential

The staff at Gehringer Elementary School welcomes you and your family to the 2017-2018 School Year.  We are committed to doing all we can to make this school year a successful experience for every student.  We firmly believe that a home/school partnership is necessary for the success of all of our students.  Learning is not an easy process! It involves sharing ideas, making mistakes, and attempting new experiences.  Learning involves hard work by everyone, the teacher, the parent, the principal, but most importantly the student.

At Gehringer, we value and challenge each student and provide opportunities for success.  Instruction is based on the Common Core Standards that support students in becoming college and career ready. They emphasize reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational. Our instruction incorporates 21st Century skills and teaches students to become versed in collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and information and media literacy. Students will explore disciplines through STEAM learning. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

Our school prides itself in the respectful inclusive environment that it provides for our students. We continue to teach essential life skills to help students become successful in life; Caring, Cooperation, Courage, Effort, Initiative, Integrity, Perseverance, Responsibility, and Respect. As a “Caring School Community” we value having our parents and community members be a part of our school. We understand the importance of ensuring that students leave Gehringer with a good foundation in life skills that will lead them on a path to success.

We challenge our students to “Reach for the Stars.”  Our goal is to empower every student to reach their full potential through these five areas of focus:

Super attendance           (Be here every day on time)

Terrific Citizen                (Demonstrate outstanding life skills)

Acquire Knowledge       (Work hard to learn all that you can)

Respect Everyone          (Respect other’s differences and treat others kindly)

Strive for Excellence (Put forth effort and do your personal best at all times)

Research and experience shows us that a parent’s/guardian’s involvement in a child’s education is directly related to his/her success in school.  To help your child “Reach for the Stars” please:

  • Ensure that your child is at school on time each day. Strive for 5 or less absences per year.
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences and school events.
  • Monitor your child’s homework daily.
  • Expect and support positive behavior at school.
  • Read with your child or encourage your child to read daily.

In addition, there are numerous volunteer opportunities in which we welcome you to become involved.  Volunteers make a tremendous positive impact and enrich our educational program.  More information regarding volunteering at Gehringer can be found on our website.  Your child’s teacher and our PTA will also provide information.  Please consider supporting our school in this way.

I look forward to partnering with you to make this an exciting and successful year for our students.  Thank you in advance for your support and commitment.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (925) 625-7070 or tleonard@ouesd.k12.ca.us
